VIRTUAL IMMERSIVE COMMUNICATIONS (VICOM)

The aim of the Virtual Immersive Communications (VICOM) project is to study and develop techniques, protocols and applications for the Virtual Immersive Telepresence (VIT). The realization and the evaluation of two demonstrators is an integral part of the project. The demonstrators are complementary each other and they aim at representing different application domains with different environmental characteristics and different requirements the infrastructure, on the development systems and on the support terminals. The reference scenarios selected for the two test-beds are: 1) the mobility in immersive environments; 2) the immersive tele-training. These two application environments require the study and development of technological "enablers" for the VIT, related to the mobile and fixed communication network infrastructure and to the (distributed) processing of the information. The definition of realistic application scenarios and the possibility to realize test-bed represent a fundamental opportunity for the development of the VIT technology. It is possible to identify the specific steps, the technological challenges, the direction changes that must be taken in the development of VIT technology. Therefore the application scenarios are fundamental tools for the planning of ongoing project activities and for the practical application of the results coming from the number of VICOM project activities.

The project considers two reference scenarios, which will be developed and enriched during the project lifetime. The scenarios represent the "planning tools" of the project in order to define the prototypes to be developed in each research unit. The realization of prototypes provides the proof of concept and the validation of the single different technological choices. Later on, it enables the development of the two demonstrators at an integrate level. The following VICOM scenarios have been selected: Mobility in Immersive Environments \u2013 MIE; Virtual Immersive Learning \u2013 VIL. The two VICOM scenarios are described through elementary behavioral elements. These elements are associated to non-trivial problems in the fields of telecommunications, computer science, micro-electronics, sensor technology. Make reference to the project on nano-technologies and sensor technology for advanced human-machine interface (3D screens, voice activated sensors, smell sensors).  In the development of the VICOM project, the two described "macro" scenarios can be considered as fixed, while the number and the characteristics of some sub-scenarios in the two macro scenarios could be adapted during the project lifetime according to the results of the project planning activities.
